The best precaution to take for genital herpes is abstinence from sexual activities, especially if the symptoms are visible (during an outbreak). Being loyal to your partner and not having sex with any one else but your partner will reduce or even eliminate the risk of being infected by herpes, but if your partner contacts herpes it doesn't necessarily mean that she/he is unloyal.
Using latex condoms and other forms of protection is another way of avoiding spreading genital herpes. As condoms can break or not cover the infected area they are not 100% safe. Pregnant women with genital herpes should consult their doctor to know if it's safe to give birth naturally or have a caesarian section.
